Description

Ahlbree used to be a respected (heh maybe tolerated is a better word) bounty hunter. He wasn't afraid of tackling dangerous men on his own, armed only with a scyth or sometimes a small sword. He wasn't the strongest but his stealth and acrobatic fighting style seemed to work just fine. He made his living turning wanted men over to the royal guard. He considered it his duty - made the world a little safer for his young niece and nephew anyway.  In town he trotted along on foot slipping in and out of the crowded elven village streets. Many knew him, some liked him - but the dungeon was  quite full of those who hated him.  And he enjoyed adding to that number. But his success made him cocky.

In the middle of arresting the town's latest most wanted, he back flipped away from the crooks sword - straight into the side of a passing wagon. His head hit wood first, then cobble stone.

He awoke in his sister's house, his head bandaged and pounding. When his vision returned he found himself surrounded by strangers. They smiled when they saw him awake. They ran and brought a woman into see him and a man. They were shouting excitedly, and were hushed by the woman. She ran her hands over Ahlbree's face. Why was this woman touching him! He had no idea who these people were. Or why they were in his sister's house. Or why he was for that matter. One of the first that had been at his bedside, called to him, "Uncle are you going to stay awake now?" Uncle???? This child was his nephew? Why couldn't he recognize him. He tried to remember what his nephew looked like. He couldn't form a face in his head. He looked away at the other faces. And as soon as he moved to the next one he forgot the last. "What is wrong with me?"

As the week passed, he didn't recover his ability to recognize his sister, brother in law, niece and nephew. He could remember their hair though, he started watching how they walked, what they wore. But mostly, he had to assume, that if they were in this house, that was who they had to be. He lay in bed for several weeks as the massive gash in the back of his head healed. He was plagued with headaches but he couldn't stand to stay in bed a moment more. His brother in law helped him walk down the stairs the first time, as he was having a horrid time balancing. But he was determined. he didn't like being a burden. Or helpless. And as a month passed he was nearly back to his old self - except for a whole world full of perpetual strangers. His neice and nephew took to announcing who they were before he could even study their clothing or hair.  One night he had taken a walk through town for the first time since his accident. It was the most he had been able to do and when he got home he was extremely fatigued. His head felt like it was swimming, and he was pretty sure he'd pushed himself too much.  As he climbed the wooden stair case to his room a strange numbness filled his head. he couldn't focus . He falted half way up and stopped. His neice saw him on the stairs and asked him if he was alright. He didn't answer but stared through her  and stumbled back against the wall.    By the time he hit the floor his niece was right by his side. It was just the first of many seizures...

A very heartbreaking fall from grace. I think you caught the desperation on his face, the paralysis of sorts and the uncontrollable way his body is reacting. The poor little girl must feel scared and helpless too, even as she comforts him. The shadow and the colours focus right on the two chracters even though there is no background.
